Custom LED Backlight

A company renowned in the field of industrial and analytical instrumentation, began an initiative to modernize their gas detection system’s LCD monitor backlight design, introducing a complex challenge that necessitated the reuse and return of a provided legacy 3.8” Sharp display. This challenge required the custom design and integration of an LED solution that would match the color temperature, chromaticity, and luminance of the original CCFL backlight design. The replacement of the original CCFL backlight with an LED design would need to provide a robust, reliable, and long-term solution to ensure the continued operation of the display system.  

A secondary challenge involved ensuring the ease of integration with the customer’s existing system, which would require a 24V interface solution for the backlight power supply. This necessitated the engineering of a custom designed LED interface board, which would allow for the seamless transition from CCFL to LED backlighting.

Solution

Challenged with the task of upgrading there CCFL backlights, AGDisplays employed a keen and technical approach rooted in extensive LED backlight design experience and excellent technical assembly skills. AGDisplays engaged with our trusted LED manufacturer to ensure the correct color matching to the original CCFL design, and then internally engineered and designed an LED backlight solution that would seamlessly integrate into the legacy display. AGDisplays then, through a delicate and precise technical process, replaced the original CCFL backlight with the new robust LED design.

To minimizes the need for modifications or adjustments during installation, AGDisplays helped to ease the transition from one backlight source to another, by designing a custom daughter board to serve as the new LED interface connector. This board was tailored to a 24V power supply specification to ensure compatibility with the customer’s existing system. By soldering the board directly to the LED’s wire leads, the custom connector design enhances reliability and stability, and provides a secure electrical connection.
